The Westport team with the Cusack Cup after beating Achill in the final.
CUSACK CUP FINAL
Westport 0-24
Achill 2-13
In Westport
WESTPORT were on a mission in West-Mayo last night after losing the Primary Junior A final against Knockmore last weekend. On this occasion the men in blue got their hands on some silverware and redeemed themselves.
The young squad repelled a strong challenge from an experienced Achill team, who cut a six-point deficit to a single point, midway through the second half.
But Westport's ship was steadied by Conor McGraynor, who dominated in the middle of the field. The physically powerful Wicklow man plucked kick-outs from the air, defused lobs close to the his own square, and drew defenders upon himself, making space for others.
McGraynor also scored seven points, including two '45s and a two-pointer from open play. Also Oisin Moran, John Grady and Darragh Hoban had strong performances.
Achill stayed in the game thanks to herculean efforts by Conor English, who was a constant dangerman. His first-half goal was a show of excellence.
English faked a shot three times, and three times a defender bought it, before the Achill man buried the ball in the net.
However, a nervy ending was avoided as Westport kept the scoreboard ticking over.
A full match report will be carried in Tuesday's Mayo News.
