Exclusive: Popular Mayo late bar to reopen under new ownership

Westport institution Henehan's on Bridge Street in Westport will reopen in the coming weeks

The Mayo News can exclusively report that Henehans on Westport’s Bridge Street will reopen in the next number of weeks under the ownership of Joe and Marian O’Malley.

After weeks of speculation, the deal to purchase the company was finalised on Monday night.

It will remain as a late bar and will open during the week and have extended opening hours.

It will be a smooth transition and all the staff will remain on.

There are currently no plans to serve food.

The O'Malley family recently celebrated Cosy Joe’s 30 years in business and their group also includes The Porter House in Westport and The Barrel and Castle in Castlebar.

They bring decades of experience and a deep local connection to this new venture.

“We’re honoured to have acquired such a prime business,” said Joe O’Malley. “Our vision is to breathe fresh life into the space, offering a vibrant new atmosphere and a high-quality late-night destination for both locals and visitors in the heart of the town.

“Customers can expect a fresh vibe and exciting new energy to accompany the reopening, with plans underway to rejuvenate the venue while celebrating its rich past. Think of it as tradition with a twist. Whether you’re in for a lively weekend night or a quiet midweek pint, the revamped space will cater to every mood, all while keeping its welcoming, local charm.”

The transition has been a personal one for Joe, who has known former owner Michael Henehan through both social and business circles, as well as a shared love for rugby.

“Michael built a strong reputation for excellence and customer care. We’re committed to upholding the same high standards that made Henehan’s on Bridge Street a landmark in the town.”
