The death has taken place of a Mayo woman who celebrated her 100th birthday with her family and neighbours in Glenhest in February.

Mamie Marley, née McManamon, who was the former Postmistress of Glenhest passed away on Tuesday in her home surrounded by her loving family. Mamie celebrated her 100th birthday on February 19 which was a joyous occasion for not only her family but for the wider Glenhest community.

Along with her late husband, Kevin, Mamie ran a small shop in their home located between St Joseph's Church and Cloondaff National School which was the heart of the community, selling everything from 'an anchor to a needle'. The Glenhest Post Office was later located to the shop and for 27 years Mamie was the local postmistress until retirement in the early 2000s.

“I miss the shop very much,” Mamie recalled to The Mayo News on the occasion of her 100th birthday last February. “We got the post office in later years and that was great because we knew all the community. I miss the customers and the people calling in every day. Going by the amount of birthday cards I got, they still remember me.”

Mamie was the fourth of seven children born to Dan McManamon and Bridget, née Gillespie who were both from Cloondaff, Glenhest. She married local man, Kevin Marley when she was 23 years and after a short number of years in England, they returned to Glenhest in the late 1940s to open the shop.

Mamie will be reposing at Glenhest Community Centre this Friday evening, May 30 from 4pm to 8pm with removal to St Josephs Church Glenhest. Funeral Mass will take place on Sunday, June 1 at 2pm with burial afterwards at Annagh Cemetery.

Predeceased by her husband Kevin, her daughter Marie and son-in-law Seán Sweeney, Mamie is survived by her sons John, Cloonboo Galway; Declan Tuam, Galway; Kevin Joe, Glenhest; her daughters, Kathleen Kelly, Newport; Gabrielle Hurst, Tuam and Sharon McGreal, Newport, her 19 grandchildren and her 25 great grandchildren.

May she rest in peace.
