A Mayo student has won a national creative writing award.

Aoife Murphy from Furnace, Newport convinced the jury with her poem "Down by the Ocean" to scoop the An Taisce Green schools award.

Her proud mother Fiona said afterwards, speaking to The Mayo News: "We are so proud as Aoife loves to write and anyone who knows her will know this poem sums up her love for outdoors, nature and what she sees down by the ocean so it’s very meaningful to her."

Aoife received the award from Joanne Scott, Green-Schools Manager, and Catherine Gaul from the Department of Heritage, Local Government and Heritage.

280 students entered from schools all over Ireland and the 1st class student Aoife Murphy from Newport National School brought home the award.
