Funeral details confirmed following passing of Mayo boy (16)

The funeral details have been confirmed in the wake of the passing of a 16-year-old student and Westport minor GAA player in Mayo University Hospital.

Christopher Gavin, who was a Transition Year student in Rice College in Westport, fell ill and was taken to the hospital for treatment, but died on Tuesday night.

Now, with the town of Westport and the wider community in shock, the funeral details have been confirmed.

Reposing at McGing’s Funeral Home on Friday, May 2, from 5 pm until 7 pm, with the public queue for entry into the funeral home coming from the Shop Street direction.

The funeral Mass will take place at 11am on Saturday, May 3, in Saint Mary’s Church, with burial afterwards in Aughavale Cemetery.

Chris is survived by his parents, Michael and Karen, his twin brother Michael, and his sisters Cathy and Emma, extended family, and a wide circle of friends.

The family home is strictly private at this time.

A tribute has also being paid to Christopher by Rice College: "A light went out in Rice College as we lost a wonderful transition year student. Christopher (Chris) Gavin passed away at the youthful age of 16 years old. The school community of Rice College are struggling after hearing of his passing at Mayo University Hospital. We extend our sympathies to Chris’s parents Michael and Karen, his twin brother Michael, his sisters Cathy and Emma. May his gentle soul rest in peace."
