The organisers of the St Patrick’s Day Parade in Westport are busy putting together this year’s festivities for our national holiday. This year's parade theme is 'Community Connections', allowing community groups to come out to showcase and celebrate their endeavours in the locality. All voluntary groups are encouraged to bring plenty of colour to celebrate Westport’s vibrant community spirit.
With community spirit at the heart of the parade, Westport native and someone who is the embodiment of community connections, the former Mayo Minister and TD, Michael Ring will lead the St Patrick’s Day Parade as Grand Marshall this year.
The Parade will commence at 12 noon on Distillery Road and all participants are asked to be in the Sacred Heart School Carpark from 11.30am. Led by Westport Town Band, the parade will continue up Distillery Road, over Mill Street, down Bridge Street, across the Mall and will then make its way up James Street past the viewing stand on the Octagon at the Town Hall. It will continue over Shop Street and Mill Street and will finish this year at the Paddington Statue at the end of Mill Street where the Town Band will play at the end.

Speaking to The Mayo News parade committee chairperson Dermott Langan praised the efforts and support from Community Groups who have come forward to take part in the parade. He also thanked Westport Men's Shed who will once again act as Parade Stewards on the day alongside An Garda Síochána. He also was high in praise for the efforts of the small committee that has organised this year’s event: “There’s only five of us; Elsie Higgins, Rhona Chambers, Maria Dolan, Rosaleen Heraty and myself – so we do our best with small resources trying to keep the tradition of honouring St Patrick in the shadow of his pilgrimage mountain.”
It would not be possible to run Westport's St Patrick's Day Parade without the financial support of our local businesses, Westport Vintners and our locally elected representatives by way of their discretionary GMA funding. The committee will also run a church gate collection on the weekend of the March 8 and 9.
