Nationally-acclaimed Mayo butchers Kelly’s Butchers have scooped three awards in the inaugural National Irish Steak Challenge.

The event was the first of its kind hosted by the group, where Kelly’s came out on top in Connacht for their well-received ribeye and fillet steaks.

The Newport-based outfit were awarded for their produce at the event, hosted by the Craft Butchers of Ireland last Sunday in The Curragh, Co Kildare.

The award was a source of pride for all involved in the butcher’s, who have been serving the people of West Mayo and beyond for 95 years.

Seán Kelly, a member of the family, lays a lot of the credit for their triumph at the door of sticking to the tried and tested methods of sourcing their beef.

“This is a very important award for us,” Kelly stated in the wake of their victory.

“We are one of the very few butchers who still farm their own cattle and run their own abattoir and this is confirmation that this traditional system results in the very best tasting beef.”

The judgement of standards was stringent, with over 30 experts in the field from a variety of professions from farm to fork making up the panel.

Kelly’s have won a number of awards previously, including securing fourth place in Checkout magazine’s top 100 black and white pudding brands in 2022.
