Weather warnings issued for Mayo for Valentine’s Day weekend

Motorists are advised to take care as frost, ice and wintry showers are set to hit, and temperatures could drop to -3°C.

Weather Warning

Frost, ice and wintry showers are set to hit, and temperatures could drop to -3°C.

Motorists and pedestrians across Co Mayo are being urged to exercise caution this weekend as low temperatures, ice and wintry showers are forecast to create hazardous conditions.

A Low Temperature / Ice Warning will come into effect at 9pm tonight (Friday, February 13) and remain in place until 10am on Saturday morning. Temperatures are expected to fall to between -1°C and -3°C overnight, increasing the risk of icy stretches on roads and footpaths.

Drivers are being warned of potentially dangerous travel conditions, particularly on untreated routes and rural roads.

A further Status Yellow Rain / Snow Warning will take effect from 12pm on Saturday (February 14) and remain in place until midnight. Forecasters say rain, heavy at times, will move across the county before turning to sleet or snow in places. Strengthening winds are also expected, leading to poor visibility and difficult travelling conditions.

Road users are advised to allow extra time for journeys, reduce speed and remain alert to changing conditions throughout the weekend.
