Mayo coldest and wettest county in Ireland last month

Once again, County Mayo has topped some unwanted record lists when it comes to the latest batch of Met Eireann monthly weather reports.

The report, which aims to examine a whole slew of meteorological statistics from across the country, has unearthed some interesting wind, rainfall, and temperature points on the county.

The first statistic worth noting is the mean monthly temperature. In October, Ireland West Airport, Knock, recorded the lowest mean temperature nationwide with 10.1 degrees Celsius, although the airport did record a mean temperature 0.9°C above the long-term average between 1991 and 2020.

Knock Airport also had their wettest October day on record, with 41.4 mm of rainfall being recorded on Thursday, October 2.

A rainfall of 46.4 mm was recorded in Claremorris, making it the wettest October day in the town in 36 years.

That wasn’t the end of rainfall statistics in the county. Newport had the highest number of ‘wet days’ (days with over 1 mm of rainfall), with 21 wet days recorded.

Belmullet felt the full force of the wind this month. The Erris town saw mean winds reach storm force, and was one of three stations to record such gales.

During Storm Amy, on Friday, October 3, Knock Airport recorded its highest ten-minute mean wind speed in October on record, with gusts reaching a speed of 74 kilometres per hour.
