STORM AMY UPDATE: Mayo coastline updated to Status Red warning

Storm Amy could potentially bring storm force eleven winds to the coast of Mayo

Coastal residents in County Mayo are being urged to brace for impact, as the county is set to feel the full force of Storm Amy.

Previously, Mayo, along with Donegal, Leitrim, Sligo, and Galway, were all upgraded by Met Éireann to a Status Orange Weather Warning today (Thursday, October 2). Now, the waters off the county have been placed under a Status Red Weather Warning.

Winds on land are expected to reach Gale Force Ten (102 to 118 kilometres an hour). However, the shorelines of the county are anticipated to reach as strong as Gale Force Eleven, also known as a 'violent storm'.

The warning will be in place from 2 pm to 8 pm tomorrow, with islanders and those in boats anticipating strong south-west to west winds.
