Thousands without power in Mayo and roads blocked following Storm Darragh

STORM Darragh has left thousands of households in Mayo without power and roads blocked by toppled trees. 

ESB workers are working to restore power to thousands of homes across the country, with most expected to have power by 5pm this evening (December 7).

Over 1,600 customers in Westport are without electricity, as are customers in Newport (476) Mulranny (57), Claremorris (708), Cong (1,058), Achill (33), Inver (59), Carrowteige (12), Killala (31) and several more across north and east Mayo. 

Council workers are working to remove fallen trees on various roads throughout the county. A number have already been cleared since the Status Red weather alert was lifted for Mayo at 3pm this morning. 

The council have reported the following roads blocked or cleared at 11 am:

Westport Belmullet Municipal District

  • Trees down at Dooyork; Bellanaboy; McGrath's Pub in Pullatomas and Rossport
  • N59 Bellacorrick to Bangor Road is clear
  • R313 Bangor to Belmullet Road is clear.

Claremorris-Swinford Municipal District

  • The N84 and R332 Hollymount Road have reopened

Castlebar Municipal District 

Trees down on the following roads

  • Clogher to Ballintubber
  • Moorhall to Ballintubber
  • Clogher to Ballyglass
