In the battle of the Rovers, it was the Achill men that came out on top in narrow fashion in a competitive cup final in Umbro Park on Saturday.
Tristan Carolan’s headed effort was enough to see the islanders clinch glory after the midfielder met Michael Moran’s corner kick just moments into the second half.
Both sides started the game cautiously with clearcut chances limited in the opening period
Achill started the brightest and they looked comfortable on the ball while their opponents struggled in possession early on. However, Chris Rowland’s side looked to threaten when the ball was played into space with the likes of Matthew Horan causing problems for the Achill defence with his speed and directness.
As the half time whistle went, the sides were tied.

Clearly, the Achill Rovers players had a pep in their step as they started the second half in style. Just two minutes in, Michael Moran’s corner kick was met by Tristan Carolan who scored in delightful fashion.
As time went on, Glenhest had some chances go their way with Fintan McManamon coming close but ultimately the League Two champions saw out the game well with determination and resilience.
A full match report will be carried in Tuesday’s edition of The Mayo News.
