THERE were scenes of great delight in Dublin this evening when Shannon Sweeney won the Irish Senior title at the National Elite Boxing Championship in The National Stadium. The St Anne's BC boxer defeated the 2022 European silver medalist Caitlin Fryers from Immaculata BC in Belfast amid scenes of great joy among her passionate supporters.
Sweeney is the reigning European champion, but adding the Elite title to that continental crown is the icing on the cake at the end of the greatest year of her boxing career.
The Mayo boxer's coach Martin Brennan was a proud man after watching his fighter lift the crown and the duo were joined in the celebrations by legendary St Anne's figures Peter Mullen and Ray Moylette.
