SENIOR FOOTBALL CHAMPIONSHIP GROUP 3
Ballaghaderreen 1-10
Knockmore 1-9
BALLAGHADERREEN
Ballaghaderreen held on for the first shock of this year’s championship when they defeated Knockmore by a single point in a windy East Mayo.
Tomas Morley’s side held off the challenge of Knockmore through sheer grit and determination as they put their mixed league form behind them to give themselves a great chance of reaching the knockout stages.
Kuba Callaghan was the scorer in chief for the home side, finishing the game with eight points, including the game-winning free four minutes from time.
Callaghan and Caolan Hopkins lit up the first-half between them as Knockmore held a three point lead at half-time, Hopkins grabbing the games opening goal in the first minute and adding four points to his tally after that.
However, it was the performance of former Mayo underage star Sharoize Akram that drove Ballagh to victory as everything good seemed to go through his hands both in attack and defence.
Domhnall Forrest hit the home side’s goal in the 35th minute to level the game and both sides traded scores up to Callaghan’s late winner.
Kevin McLoughlin had a chance to level the game deep in injury time but his shot from the right wing drifted wide.
Callaghan, Akram and Darragh Kelly impressed for the home side with Hopkins, McLoughlin and Sean Holmes best for Knockmore.
