INTERMEDIATE FOOTBALL CHAMPIONSHIP GROUP 4

Castlebar Mitchels B 1-8

Davitts 1-12

CASTLEBAR

A goal in the opening minutes of the second half from Dylan Gallagher proved crucial as Davitts edged past a tenacious home side in Josie Munnelly Park on Sunday.

The Mitchels team included championship veterans such as Ray O’Malley, Fergal Durkan and David Stenson along with a nice mix of young promising players such as Paddy Flannery and Mark Cunningham.

It was close going in at the break, with Davitts, who are celebrating their 50 year in football, just a point clear, 0-6 to 0-5.

Mayo legend, Colm Boyle was the anchor in the Davitts defence where he was acting as the sweeper for the majority of the 60 minutes.

In front of him, former Mayo underage player, Fenton Kelly was very prominent throughout from the middle of the field.

Davitts veteran, Mickey Conroy entered the play in the final ten minutes and used the ball very well, creating chances for his team mates to pop over.

A goal from the penalty spot from corner-forward Mark Cunningham brought Mitchels back into it and created a nervy end to the game for the men from Ballindine but they saw the game out well in the final stages winning by a four-point margin.

Man of the match, Dylan Gallagher impressed along with Fenton Kelly, Colm Boyle and Liam Kearns. Ray O’Malley, John Kennedy and Mark Cunningham displayed lots of promise for the home side.

A full match report will be carried in Tuesday’s Mayo News.
