A blend of Cup and League action contributed to a thrilling weekend of Mayo club soccer, with some tantalising displays across the board.
Here, we'll run you through some of the drama, including a 4-3 roller-coaster of a game which had two injury-time goals.
FAI JUNIOR CUP
There were mixed results for the Mayo clubs travelling east in the Cup. Hosts Saint John’s Athletic may have found the lead via Eamon Harney, but strikes from Liam Morris, Nathan Reilly-Doyle, and a Cillian Redmond penalty helped Ballyheane through to the next round.
Crossmolina, however, didn’t have the same luck against Ballinahown. Martin Deady did net, however, Ian Rosney (2), Mark Egan, and Oisín O’Reilly wrapped the tie up before the break.
PREMIER LEAGUE
A Cathal Howley brace, along with a Jamie Staunton second-half net-shaker, was enough to keep Westport United ‘B’ atop the tree with a win over Straide and Foxford United. Chasers Castlebar Celtic ‘B’ eked out a win over Ballina Town ‘B’ thanks to a goal from Jake Daly to keep themselves snapping at the Covies coat-tails.
Odhran Donnelly’s second-half goal for Snugboro teed the hosts up for a win over Iorras Aontaithe, but Jamie Reilly and Diarmuid O’Donoghue flipped the script to hand the barony boys a big win on the road.
LEAGUE ONE
The tie of the round came in the north where Killala welcomed Achill Rovers. Tommy Muldoon and James O’Hara traded strikes early doors, before Michael Corrigan inched hosts Killala ahead at the break.
James O’Hara’s spot-kick levelled it for the Islanders, before Muldoon looked to have sealed it for Killala with minutes of normal time to go. However, Terence Dever’s injury-time net-shaker seemed to secure a share of the spoils, but hero Muldoon made it a hat-trick, sparking jubilation for the hosts.
More drama came in Erris, when Bangor Hibs and Conn Rangers ‘B’ went toe-to-toe. Sean O’Neill inched the Rangers ahead, but David Conroy and Kyle Heffernon had flipped the advantage. Conroy and Kyle Holmes had the gap out to three by the changeover. Nathan Boukiod pulled one back, but the game was won as the Hibs took home the points.
Elsewhere, Conall Mac Gabhann’s pair of net-rattlers were enough to see Partry Athletic get the better of Fahy Rovers.
LEAGUE TWO
Shane Ryan (2), Rafael Rosado Da Costa (2) and his namesake Rodrigo Rosado Da Costa were on point for Ballinrobe Town ‘B’ as they swept aside Westport United ‘C’ in a 5-1 win. Charlestown Athletic, and primarily four-goal Robert Jordan, were on fire as they demolished Manulla ‘B’ 6-1.
Crossmolina ‘B’ were less emphatic, but still won well as Clive Muldoon (2) and Keaton Walsh won 3-0 against Conn Rangers ‘C’. Finally, a late Cillian Reilly goal secured a last-gasp draw for Glenhest Rovers ‘B’ over Fahy Rovers ‘B’.
