The Tochar Phadraig Fundraising Walk is set to return for its 16th year this May in Ballintubber.

The Tochar Phadraig Fundraising Team have organised a historic 22-mile route across rural Mayo to raise vital funds for GOAL and Cancer Fund for Children.

Founded in 2008 by Westport native Robbie McCarty, the Tochar Phadraig Walk began with just 14 participants and has grown significantly over the years.

Last year’s 15th anniversary walk was a major milestone, with 50 walkers taking part and €15,000 raised for charitable causes.

Special recognition was given to Harry Hayes (11), who was named Youngest Walker, and Nora Gavin, recipient of the Spirit of the Tochar Phadraig Walk Award at last year’s event.

Speaking ahead of this year’s walk, Robbie McCarthy said: “This event is only possible because of our walkers and their supporters. Watching it grow and welcoming new faces every year has been a real privilege.”

Organisers have said while the full walk covers 22 miles, walkers are welcome to join for individual sections. The first 10 miles will bring walkers to Aughagower, where others can join for the remaining 12 miles along the road.

The walk will begin at  6.15am from Ballintubber Abbey, with a free bus service departing Westport town at 5:30am from the Tesco Westport car park.

Each registered participant will receive an online fundraising page to support their walk and share with family, friends, and colleagues.

Those interested in registering can do so on: www.idonate.ie/forms/c/tocharphadraig1, while donations can be made at  www.idonate.ie/donate/event/tocharphadraig26.
