'We just want the club to be successful' - New Mayo FC secretary takes over

Michelle Cunningham is the new Mayo FC secretary

THE announcement came late on Thursday. Michelle Cunningham is the new secretary for Mayo FC. A further step forward for the new and aspiring soccer club.

Only a few days before Christmas, the FAI confirmed, that Mayo FC will be admitted to the new tier of the League of Ireland which will come into effect in 2027.

The new club secretary, is no stranger to soccer administration having been on the Ballina Town FC committee for some time and also filling the roles of Child Liaison Officer and Fundraising Officer for the Moysiders.

“Joe Faughnan, the Mayo FC chairman, approached me and we were just chatting and he asked me would I give a hand out,” Cunningham told The Mayo News after her appointment: “I suppose I did well at Ballina Town. Joe would have known me from that. He asked me would I jump on board, and I have to say, the committee in the Mayo FC, they're so solid.”

The Mayo FC committee has members from all over Mayo, from Westport, Claremorris and Castlebar. There is a 50 per cent female representation as well.

“We just want the club to be successful and we want to promote soccer and share the pathway, for the youth going forward, in the local and surrounding areas.”

Cunningham will be the chief administrator in her voluntary position. She will be dealing with all the correspondence going forward - player's registrations, ensuring the running of the club, also fundraising and liaising with the sponsors form part of the portfolio.

Cunningham sends her best wishes to John Durkan, the outgoing secretary: “Mayo FC are extremely thankful for all his hard work and dedication.”
