Mayo man and former Ipswich Town footballer David Cawley has announced his retirement from professional football.

Ballina man Cawley has had an established and long-winding career in the League of Ireland, having made the move from Ballina Town to the Ipswich Academy in 2007.

The 33-year-old made the move to Sligo Rovers, where he spent the majority of his career, with the midfielder also playing for Saint Patrick’s Athletic and Galway United.

Most recently, Cawley had pitched up in Ballybofey with Finn Harps and made 40 appearances for the men in blue.

On May 9, Cawley made his last appearance, playing 65 minutes in a 2-0 loss to Athlone Town.

Ten days later, the club announced that the player, who had recently made his 400th appearance in senior football, would be leaving the club.

Now, Cawley has decided it’s time to hang up the boots at the end of a fantastic career.

In a statement on his social media, Cawley confirmed the news.

“After weeks of reflection, I’ve decided that the time has come to retire from professional football," the statement read. “It’s a day I’ve often dreaded, having spent most of my life in this great game – but looking back now, I just feel incredibly grateful.

“From the injuries and setbacks to the endless travel, big European nights, a few memorable wins, and plenty of tough losses – it’s all of these moments that I’ll carry with me and cherish for the rest of my life.

“A massive thank you to my family,  my wife, my kids, close friends, and everyone who has supported me on this journey. Your support has never gone unnoticed," he continued. “Football has been a massive part of my life, and it will continue to be, so for now, my full focus is helping the next generation of boys and girls chase their dreams.

“Thank you, DC.”
