A late, late goal in extra time from Rhys Saville made sure Castlebar Celtic advanced to the Connacht U-18 Cup final after the young Hoops got the better of a talented Moyne Villa side.
A long afternoon ended in joy for the reigning Mayo U-18 league champions. There was never much between the sides, as two ten-minute periods of extra time were needed to determine a winner.
With the game scoreless for the first 81 minutes, Tiernan Brady headed home excellently from an inch-perfect corner. It looked like victory was to come for the home side until drama occurred.
A crazy scramble for possession in the Celtic goalmouth resulted in the ball falling to Villa’s James Kisyov, who rattled the net. Extra time awaited.
Many thought penalties would be needed, but Celtic’s Rhys Saville had other ideas. The Celtic winger chased down a ball and got there first ahead of Fionn Barnes. And with coolness, he slotted home to send his side into the Connacht Cup final, where Mervue United await.
Bot Castlebar Celtic’s Super League and U-18 teams will now play Connacht Cup finals against the same opponents.
A full match report plus reaction will be carried in Tuesday’s Mayo News.
