It took Castlebar Celtic extra time to dispose of a committed St John’s Athletic side and advance to the Connacht Cup final.

Celtic went in front on nine minutes when Niall Brennan was tripped in the box and Jordan Loftus fired home from the spot. Cian Kelly equalised before half-time for the home side. Substitute Luke Kelly had a lot of work to do to get Celtic’s second on 73 minutes after good interplay by Eoghan Hughes and Loftus. He cut in from the wing and fired across St John’s ’keeper, Aidan Fallon, to restore Celtic’s lead. St John’s equalised when Daire Keenan pounced on a loose ball with three minutes remaining, to send the tie to extra time

Luke Kelly powered home a header three minutes into the first period to put Celtic in front, and Loftus doubled the margin when he broke. Another sub, Fionn Mahon, ran the length of the field to make it five, with two minutes to go. Unfortunately, referee John O’Connor was unimpressed with Mahon’s shirtless celebration and gave him a second yellow, which will keep him out of the final against Mervue United in a few weeks’ time.
