Westport United’s U-18s retained the Quigley Cup for the first time in their history in style on Sunday as they blew away Conn Rangers with an emphatic performance.

Westport started the game with real attacking purpose, but it was ’Rangers that took the lead against the run of play. Thomas Varkonda took advantage of some clumsy defending to slot the ball home from close range. Celebrations were immediately cut short though as Westport hit back within 60 seconds thanks to a Jack O’Malley header.

Despite the best efforts of the Conn’ ‘keeper, Westport took the lead on the half-hour mark as Darragh Corrigan headed home from a corner.

Westport ended the half how they started it with some scintillating attacking play from their forward line.

Forward Simian Popov - who was at times unplayable on the day - added Westport’s third, before turning provider for Jack Walsh who couldn’t miss from two yards out. Popov then added his second with a fine curling effort to put the result in no doubt going into the break.

Conn’, to their credit, came out in the second half swinging and got a goal back on the hour mark, but Westport were too strong and dominated the remainder of the game adding another three goals to complete a comprehensive victory and keep the cup in Westport for another season.
