Mayo FC’s U-14s were left to rue a disastrous opening five minutes against Galway United today.
The home side found themselves trailing after only sixty seconds as they failed to clear the very first attack of the game, resulting in an unfortunate own goal from defender Shay Coen.
Things went from bad to worse four minutes later when Galway forward Luke Barry took advantage of more pedestrian defending and doubled the visitors’ lead from close range.
To Mayo’s credit, they managed to compose themselves at the back and defended well for the remainder of the game as Galway continued to pose a threat going forward.
In the second period, the home side managed to get more of a foothold in midfield with Matthew Vahey breaking up play well and Matthew Daly working hard to try and create some attacking opportunities.
Clear-cut chances were hard to come by for Mayo as they struggled to get enough bodies in attack to really test the Galway defence.
The closing stages saw a determined Mayo continue to push hard for a goal and Galway had to work very hard to maintain their clean sheet.
The result was a defeat for Mayo in a game that was a lot closer than the final scoreline suggests.
