A depleted Mayo FC endured a tough afternoon against a free-scoring Derry City side in the U-15 League of Ireland this weekend.
The sun had come out for the Foylesiders visit to Umbro Milebush Park, but it wasn’t long before it was raining goals. Mayo FC struggled from the off against a visiting side that played with speed, tempo and purpose.
Eoghan Curran opened the scoring after just four minutes and Derry City never looked back. They added another four before the half an hour mark, capitalising on some slack defending around the edge of the box from Mayo FC.
Mayo came out after the break looking much more settled and for large spells of the second part worked the ball well and created some decent chances. Some good work from Oran Heaney and Dylan Dunne saw the home side come close to scoring on a couple of occasions.
Derry couldn’t be contained though and added a clinical fifth just before the break as Terrance Doherty finished smartly at the back post. Mayo had to play the last 30 minutes of the game a man down due to injuries and, to their credit, battled valiantly and never stopped running.
Derry were comfortable throughout though and added another two goals in the dying minutes of the game to make it 8-0 to the visitors on the day.
