Conn Rangers 0

Westport United 2

In Mount Falcon.

Conn Rangers can thank their goalkeeper, Brian McMahon, for keeping this to two-nil. He made three excellent saves – two in the first half denying Dan O’Malley, and in the second to block Kevin Kitterick’s shot.

Neither side could break the deadlock in an evenly-contested first half. The extremely narrow second pitch at Mount Falcon suited neither side but Rangers did create a few chances, with Evan Reape, Sean Holmes and Colm Ruttledge all testing Gary Cunningham.

Westport had their chances too. Kevin Kitterick, Cillian White, Cillian McGlade and Darren Browne all threatened.

The summer rain disappeared for the second half, and Westport began to control the game. Their young players are fast and fit, and the under-strength Rangers began to tire, allowing Cillian White and man of the match, Caoimhin O’Toole, to dictate matters in the middle of the park.

Kevin Kitterick found the net from distance, after sixty-five minutes, from a Darren Browne throw. Despite the slender lead, the visitors looked comfortable and deserved their second from substitute Cian Halpin’s last-minute shot.

It wasn’t Conn’s day, but McMahon, Reape, Holmes and Owen McNamara put in solid shifts.

O’Toole, White, Darren Browne and Noah Massey, were best for Westport.
