Crossmolina were in this game until they started conceding goals. Then they couldn’t stop. Eleven of them in all, went past their defence and goalkeeper, Sean Gallagher. Dan O’Malley, playing as a traditional centre forward, got four. Kevin Kitterick got two with Dylan O’Malley, Evan Durkan, Cian Halpin, PJ Calvey and Harrison Quinn, getting one each.

Westport signalled their intent from the kick-off, winning two corners in the opening minute. Evan Durkan got their opener on five minutes when he was put through by man of the match Dan O’Malley, after Crossmolina lost possession from a throw-in. Despite the setback, Crossmolina stayed in it until they conceded four goals in a dreadful twelve-minute spell before the break.

The second goal was a work of art. Cillian McGlade played a ball into the void behind full back Noel McDonnell. Kevin Kitterick ran in, brought it to the end line and crossed it for Dan O’Malley to tap in. It was a vintage Westport United goal.

Westport finished the half 6-0 up. Crossmolina simply weren’t at the same level as their hosts but they kept trying, to their credit.

Harrison Quinn announced his arrival from the bench with a screamer as they added five to their first half tally.

The manner of the result isn’t much use to either side. Westport will be glad to get back to wining; Crossmolina will be glad to get home and put the evening behind them.
