Mayo pride as young rugby stars play in U-18 Six Nations

Kitty Sweeney and Evie Kennedy represented Ireland at the U-18 Women's Six Nations

TWO Mayo rugby players showcased their talent for Ireland at the U-18 women's Six Nations tournament last weekend.

Kitty Sweeney and Evie Kennedy represented their respective clubs Westport RFC and Ballina RFC at the multi-day event in England.

“We at Ballina RFC are very proud of Evie,” said Deirdre Whyte, the club's director of girls rugby “It was a very well deserved nomination. Evie has been great with us all through the years. When it came to training, she was so focused on her rugby.”

Whyte praised Kennedy for always being a pleasure to work with and pointed out that her sister Grace captained the Ballina U-18 side this year.

Kennedy might be a forward nominally, but she might as well play on the wing, as Whyte explains:

“Sometimes when you see big, strong girls like that, they might not have the pace and whatever. Evie has pace. You know when Evie gets that ball and she takes off, something's going to happen.”

The other Mayo girl who represented Ireland's U-18 team, Kitty Sweeney, has also received heartfelt congratulations from her club, Westport RFC: “To earn the honour of wearing the green jersey is a testament to Kitty’s dedication, hard work, and passion for the game, and it is a proud moment not only for her and her family, but for everyone connected with the club,” said Westport RFC President John Ryan.

He stated that Kitty has been a wonderful ambassador for her club both on and off the field, and her progression to the international stage is an inspiration to all the club's young players.

“We are immensely proud to see one of our own reach such heights and have no doubt this is just the beginning of many more successes to come. Everyone at the club wishes Kitty continued success in her rugby journey.”
