CONNACHT JUNIOR CUP PRELIMINARY ROUND
Westport 36
Galwegians 2XV 5
In Carraholly
The 'Bulls' pulled off a decent win in challenging conditions: Heavy rain turned the ground into a muddy surface on Saturday evening.
It proved to be a bruising encounter, but as many times before so far in this season, Westport's defensive work was impressive, only conceding five points.
Galwegians Seconds brought early intensity, contesting fiercely at the breakdown and attempting to disrupt Westport’s rhythm.
However, it was Westport who struck first, asserting themselves through strong forward carries and efficient set-piece work.
Tom Horsecraft crossed twice in the opening half, finishing well from close range as Westport’s pack began to impose itself.
Adam Sheridan added a further try before the interval, with Stephan Loftus converting once to give the hosts a big lead at the break.
Galwegians responded with aggression and commitment throughout. But as the second half unfolded, Westport’s superior conditioning and power told decisively.
Cormac Lyons, later deservedly named Man of the Match, led by example with a dynamic performance and a well-taken try early in the second half.
Brendan McLoughlin and Caolan O’Brien followed suit, each finishing off sustained pressure as Westport stretched the game and capitalised on tiring defenders. Harry Sheridan added two conversions to complete the scoring.
Galwegians managed one try of their own but were ultimately worn down by a composed Westport performance.
Next up for Westport is another home tie. This coming weekend, the 'Bulls' face Sligo Seconds at home in Carraholly in the Round of 16 fixture.
If they win again, Westport will meet Tuam in the quarter-final, who beat Ballina.
