The Connacht Rugby mens' team will spend two nights in Westport and prepare for their season opener on Saturday week.

Connacht Rugby will set up camp in Mayo for two days, The Mayo News can reveal.

Right now, the team managed by their new head coach Stuart Lancaster, is preparing for their United Rugby Championship (URC) campaign.

The season kicks off on Saturday, September 27 against Benetton Treviso at the Dexcom Stadium Galway.

Also, the team will hold an open training session in the Dexcom this Saturday, September 20, from 12pm. While it is a free of charge event, at least season ticket holders were emailed by Connacht Rugby a few days ago, with a registration link. Registration beforehand is required.

Connacht Rugby start new season with new head coach

The last season ended in disappointing fashion as Connacht Rugby only finished in 13th place of the URC, and subsequently didn't qualify for the knock-out stages.

The team only managed to win six matches out of 18.

However, the season also included a historic event, as Connacht Rugby played a professional rugby match in Hastings Insurance MacHale Park Castlebar for the first time ever.

The occasion was monumental, as Connacht stalwart and proud Mayo man Dave Heffernan entered the pitch against Munster on March 29.

The appointment of former Leinster, England and Racing 92 head coach Stuart Lancaster as the new man in charge for the Western province has created some buzz.

The decision, to branch out into the province will be positively received by rugby fans outside of Galway. The team will stay for a couple of nights in Westport and have a training session at a local facility.
