MAYO man Caelan Doris has been nominated for the prestigious World Rugby Player of the Year award.
The Lacken native was one of just four players nominated for the award following a stellar year which saw him made captain of the Ireland rugby team.
The Leinster Number 8 most recently featured for Ireland when they defeated Argentina to win the Admiral Brown Cup. The trophy is named after Mayo native Admiral William Brown, who is known as ‘the father of the Argentine navy’.
Doris was nominated for the Player of the Year Award alongside four South Africans; Eben Etzebeth, Pieter-Steph du Toit and Cheslin Kolbe.
Alan Rowe, Chairman of Ballina Rugby Club, paid tribute to their former player stating: To have a lad who came here one Saturday morning at the age of six, nominated for World Player of the Year is the stuff of dreams. Caelan is an inspiration to all of us here in Ballina, but particularly to our young players who dream of following in his footsteps.”
The 2024 World Rugby Player of the Year will be announced at the World Rugby Awards in Monaco on Sunday, 24 November.
