Warm and glowing tributes have been paid to Sr Eileen Walsh, who made a huge contribution to the life of the Tuam area over many years. Eileen was born and raised in Roundfort, Mayo, where the family lived at the Station House.

She was a member of the teaching profession at the Mercy Convent in Tuam for many years and specialised in music where she played a central role in encouraging students to pursue their talents in such a special way.

Mercy, Tuam, led the tributes to this special lady who devoted so much of her time to the wellbeing and betterment of so many people.

“We are deeply saddened to hear of the passing of our dear Sr Eileen Walsh who played such an important and cherished role in the musical life of The Mercy Convent from the 1970s to 2006.

“We are deeply saddened to hear of the passing of our dear Sr Eileen Walsh who played such an important and cherished role in the musical life of The Mercy Convent from the 1970s to 2006.

“Her immense musical talent, her generous mentorship, and her unwavering dedication left a lasting impression on all who were taught by her and all who had the privilege of knowing her. Heaven’s choir has gained a wonderful conductor.”

Jackie O’Flaherty spoke of her huge regard for Sr Eileen: “Like so many, I was influenced by the wonderful, kind and inspirational Sr Eileen

"I’m not sure we appreciated all the work she did rewriting scores for every instrument until all hours of the night, creating a huge orchestra/choirs, endless one on one classes and having seen her do so much I never heard her get cross or lose her patience.

"Eileen was a beautiful nurturing lady in its best form.”

Áine Minogue referred to Sr Eileen’s amazing musical legacy to students from the Tuam region.

“May she rest in peace after a life of deep and sincere vocation and hard work dedicated to music and to her students. My debt to her is immense and I will remain forever grateful for all she taught me.

“She worked tirelessly, five choirs, orchestra, musicianship classes, and private students on several instruments. I don’t know how she did it! She leaves an extraordinary legacy.”

A statement from St Jarlath’s College said they were deeply saddened by the passing of Sr Eileen Walsh.

“She dedicated over 30 years to the Opera as Chorus Mistress and her unwavering commitment and musical talent will never be forgotten by those she mentored.

"Thank you, Sr Eileen, for your dedication to the Jarlath’s College Opera. Sincere condolences to her Mercy sisters, family and friends.”
