Great start: The Merry Monk Ballina team pictured ahead of their league curtain raiser against Maree
Mayo basketball club, Team Merry Monk Ballina have had a successful start into their league campaign. On the opening day of the Basketball Ireland Development League (BIDL), Ballina opened the season with a home game against Galway side Maree Basketball Club.
The Moysiders came out on top 83-65 in what was eventually a comfortable win for Derek Cunningham's men. The match ebbed and flowed until half-time, with Ballina trailing 31-35, but a strong third quarter paved the way for victory.
Ballina outscored their opponents 29-10 in that pivotal period. Top scorers for Team Merry Monk were Nathan Roddy with 22 points and Ronan McGarrity with 21 while Mark Cunningham contributed 16 to the total.
