The emergency department at Mayo University Hospital in Castlebar
The Mayo University Hospital has approved plans to hire more nursing staff for the Emergency Department.
In a statement, Hospital Manager Catherine Donohoe explained, that 15 whole-time-equivalent roles will be filled. Additionally, the MUH intends to hire 3.5 Healthcare Assistants.
The new roles "are currently being resourced with offers having gone out to 6 Nursing staff and 2 Healthcare Assistants," Donohoe said.
The Hospital Manager also stated their 'optimistic target' of having all staff in post by year end.
The news comes as a response to a Parliamentary Question filed by Deputy Paul Lawless from Mayo.
The Aontú representative asked the Minister for Health Jennifer Carroll MacNeill (Fine Gael) 'to provide an update' on the hiring process for Mayo University Hospital.
Lawless commented saying, the current hirings can only be a first step: "This is not the finish line—it’s the starter pistol. A positive first step, yes, but one taken after far too many laps around the bureaucratic track."
He claimed, that 'the Minister herself acknowledged the “chronic” levels of understaffing'. The Knock-based TD said that these admissions should have sparked action long ago and added 'admissions don’t heal patients—staffing does'.
Deputy Lawless called for the implementation of the full Safe Staffing Framework across all departments.
