Irish celebrity chef Donal Skehan had a "smashing" return to the stage at the Bord Bia Bloom festival over the bank holiday - but not in the way he expected.

The celeb chef was midway through a live cooking demonstration at the festival in the Phoenix Park when disaster struck as the oven door he was using suddenly shattered into pieces in his hands in front of a packed crowd.

Skehan took the moment in stride, joking with the crowd and later sharing footage of the mishap on Instagram.

"Had a SMASHING day @bordbiabloom! It's been ten years but I'm thrilled to be back with a BANG!" he wrote, alongside a video of the moment the glass door exploded mid-demo.

"I always get asked what my worst kitchen disaster has been, well it happened today live in front of 100's of people!"

The incident took place while Skehan was preparing a dish on the Quality Kitchen Stage. Just as he went to pop the tray into the oven, things took a turn as the glass door detached and, moments later, shattered entirely, sending shards across the stage.

But instead of panicking, Skehan turned the whole thing into a comedy set. "That was not part of the plan," he told the laughing audience before asking: "Has anyone got some Pritt Stick? A bit of masking tape?"

Fans watching the footage online were quick to praise his ability to laugh off the moment and keep the show going.

"A HUGE thank you to the most AMAZING audience I've ever had for a cookery demo," he added. "You honestly kept me going during the craziest moment in the kitchen - I will remember this FOREVER!"

Skehan confirmed no one was injured in the mishap and gave credit to the event crew for their speedy response: "The incredible crew at Bord Bia had the oven replaced in less than an hour!"

He even followed up in the comments with another pun, writing: "Thanks to @bordbiabloom for giving me my big BREAK! "

Skehan's comeback to the Bloom festival may not have gone to plan, but it's guaranteed to go down as one of the most memorable cookery demos of the year.
