Mayo’s famous Ashford Castle has been named among ten of Europe’s most impressive castle hotels for a Halloween break.
The five-star hotel in Cong features in new research by car rental comparison website DiscoverCars.com, which highlights historic castles where visitors can spend the night.
The list focuses on medieval and Gothic-style properties across Europe, combining historic architecture with modern luxury.
Ashford Castle, former home of the Guinness family, is renowned for its Gothic Revival architecture, extensive grounds and range of activities, including falconry.
Despite its high price, the researchers highlighted Ashford Castle as an option for a special occasion or a once-in-a-lifetime experience.
The research also features Augill Castle in Cumbria, England, a Gothic Revival property, situated between the Lake District and Yorkshire Dales, featuring battlements and defensive towers.
In Switzerland, Château d’Ouchy, overlooking Lake Geneva, offers accommodation in a medieval setting.
Castillo de Arteaga in Spain’s Basque Country is another option, with its Neo-Gothic architecture and location within the Urdaibai Nature Reserve.
One of the more unusual hotels on the list is Gniew Castle in Poland, where guests can take part in ghost tours through historic corridors, former torture chambers and underground cellars.
The remaining hotels on the list are Parador de Olite, Parador de Alarcón and Parador de Cardona in Spain, Hotel Zamek Ryn in Poland and Hotel Schloss Eckberg in Germany.
