The major sports infrastructure project will now enter the design phase and overall project management

A major sports infrastructure project in Mayo's county town has taken a significant step forward with the official award of the design contract for the new Mayo Regional Sports Campus.

Tobin Consulting Engineers has been appointed to lead the project's design phase, which includes detailed design, preparation of tender documents, and overall project management. The development represents a €12.1 million investment, backed by a €7.5 million grant that has already been secured.

Located at Knockaphunta, near Lough Lannagh in Castlebar, the new campus is set to become a flagship sporting hub for the West of Ireland. Plans include a world-class athletics track, floodlit all-weather 4G pitches for GAA, soccer, and rugby, high-performance training facilities, and fully accessible changing rooms, all designed with sustainability at their core.

Preparatory works and environmental assessments are currently underway to ensure all statutory and environmental requirements are met ahead of construction.

Speaking on the progress, Mayo Minister Alan Dillon said the appointment of Tobin Consulting Engineers, a highly capable local firm, ensures local expertise will help deliver a project of regional and national significance.

"This facility will not only nurture our future sports stars and support high-performance athletes, but it will also provide an inclusive, sustainable space for local clubs, schools, and the wider community to stay active and healthy," he said.

Tender documentation is expected to be completed by the end of the year, with construction contracts due to be awarded in March or April 2027.
