ONE of Mayo’s newest basketball clubs stands on the verge of its first national title.
Mayo Meteors, formed in 2018, will face a showdown with the Dublin Raiders in the final of the Ireland Development League Plate tomorrow evening (Friday).
The Meteors’ come into this game on the back of an epic four-point semi-final win over a fancied Fr Mathews side in Tourmakeady.
“I’ve had these lads for about five years, from U-17. I took them to America on a trip, and they kept playing together. To see them play like that is amazing,” their coach Terry Kennedy reflected when he spoke to The Mayo News following the semi-final.
“They’re so happy now, and getting better with every game. They’re always training hard, always trying to get better. A national final, I couldn’t ask for much more for them, I’m so delighted.”
The Meteors recently enjoyed regional success when they overcame local rivals Ballina Braves when they clashed in the LLR Top 4 Senior Men’s Cup final.
Speaking to The Mayo News today (Thursday), Kennedy predicted a ‘really tough game’ against Dublin Raiders, who they beat 89-77 in their most recent Conference 2 clash.
The Castlebar-based side will be without the injured Colm Hegarty (hand) while top-scorer Mattie McHale is out through suspension.
“It’s going to be a tough game, they are very strong. They’ve got a lot of good players, a couple of Eastern Europeans,” Kennedy said. “We’re playing well. We’re probably playing our basketball of the year.
“It’d be unreal to win this. I’m under no illusions that we’re going in against a really good side but we’re playing well, and we have momentum.
“We’re good enough to win but we’ll have to play extremely well. It’d mean an awful lot to win a national title.”
A full match report of the Basketball Ireland Development League plate final will be carried in Tuesday’s Mayo News.
