THE large crowd gathered in the Dexcom Stadium in Galway were treated to a cracking game of rugby which produced an array of tries and a total of 80 points scored.
St. Gerald’s College of Castlebar had an array of talent on display and ultimately got the better of their Westport opponents. The victory meant that Gerald's have now won Connacht senior titles in rugby, soccer and football this year, a stunning statistic.
Although Rice College were first to get on the scoreboard, through a penalty in the sixth minute, Castlebar had the better first half. There were some excellent carries by Leo Bailey and the majestic Excel Anslem.
The Castlebar side managed to score three tries in the opening half, to lead at the interval 17-10.
Chaos ensued in the second period.
Rice College began the second half at a lightning pace. They had three tries on the board by the tenth minute, and it seemed as though they could kick on and win it, however, they did not score again for the remainder of the game.
Gerald’s managed to score their first try of the second half, with 14 minutes on the clock, and they suddenly had complete control of the game.
Excellent work from the likes of Patrick Flannelly and Dylan Rice helped the Castlebar side score four superb tries, and secure the win for their team.
