ADAM Nugent was the hero for Westport United when he headed home a 93rd minute goal that won them their first ever Westaro Cup.
After a poor-quality game which produced loads of shots but few thrills, Westport United ultimately found a way in a game that looked destined for extra-time and penalties.
It all came from a lovely cross from Kevin Ketterick into Nugent, who headed it back the way it came to raise the biggest cheer of the afternoon.
The stage looked set for a cup final classic, given how way the first ten minutes played out.
Jack O’Connor and Cormac Caulfield were lively for Kiltimagh/Knock, who drew saves out of Westport’s Gary Cunningham in the first five minutes.
United had their own chances, but they never amounted to serious opportunities.
Both ‘keepers made their respective saves, which were they were rarely more than routine.
The deadlock continued after half-time as the tempo and quality of the game regressed further.
The excellent Cormac Caulfield looked to have scored the winner with a minute of normal time to go, but his thunderbolt only got as far as the side net.
The game was in the pits of injury time when Nugent delivered the winner from out of nowhere.
However, there was one more moment of drama when Mayo Football League Player of The Year Jack O’Connor drew an outstanding outstretched save from Gary Cunningham in the 96th minute.
The full-time whistle followed promptly, sending the Westaro Cup down the new N5 for the first time in its history.
