Midweek games ‘a killer’ for clubs

Kiltimagh-Knock United coach not a fan of Thursday night football

Midweek games ‘a killer’ for clubs

KILTIMAGH-KNOCK UNITED had an eventful week.
Last Thursday night, just days after beating the reigning Super League champions, Ballyheane, they went to Castlebar Celtic and lost a tight league encounter.
They returned to Celtic Park on Sunday and beat the home side in a Westaro Cup tie that produced eight goals.
Team coach Paul Byrne and his colleagues experienced wildly varying emotions in the space of one week, but on Thursday night he didn't mince his words when it came to criticising the scheduling of midweek Super League games.
“Thursday night games are a killer for us and a killer for the officials too,” he told The Mayo News.
“We had one lad who had to miss a day's work to be here tonight to play. We have three lads in Dublin and to expect them to be here for a Thursday night game is madness. If we have to play two games we'd be as well playing Friday and Sunday because then lads would only have to take a half-day off work on a Friday,” the well-known coach explained.
The fact that there had been officials missing on Thursday night too only added to Byrne's frustration. John Mulroe had to ref’ the match without any assistants and, while Byrne said this had no impact on the result, he said it was unfair to expect one person to take charge of such a pivotal match.
“It was really tough on John tonight too. He did a great job but he had to do three or four things at once. If we're promoting the Super League as the best league then Thursday night games are totally going against that.
“We were missing three lads because the game was fixed for a Thursday night.
“Two of the lads in Dublin just couldn't get off work and another lads was doing an exam in Galway. We were going to draft in a few U-18 lads but they have a Connacht Cup final on Sunday and we couldn't do that.
“Thursday night games are very hard on rural clubs. It's supposed to be the best league and there are some very competitive games every week, but if clubs can't get their best team out for games it makes it a bit uneven,” he concluded.
