A road safety awareness event focusing on the theme of “Consequences” is set to take place on this Wednesday, April 15, at the TF Theatre in Castlebar. The event is aimed at Transition Year students and will explore the real-life impact of dangerous behaviour on roads.
The initiative is organised by Mayo County Council’s Road Safety Office in partnership with AXA Insurance. It seeks to encourage safer decision-making among young people and promote greater awareness of road safety.
Attendees will receive information on the effects of dangerous driving, including speeding, substance misuse, and distracted driving. The event will outline how such behaviours can affect drivers, passengers, and other road users.

Speaking ahead of the event, Frances Mitchell, Mayo Road Safety Officer, said: “The theme of ‘Consequences’ is about making the reality of road safety clear and personal. We want students to understand that every decision on the road matters, and that the impact of one poor decision can last a lifetime”.
Speakers at the event will include representatives from An Garda Síochána, Mayo Fire Service, the National Ambulance Service, and an Accident and Emergency consultant from Mayo University Hospital. They will share first-hand accounts of road traffic incidents and their outcomes.
Additional presentations will be delivered by a family member of a person who died in a road traffic collision, as well as individuals who have survived such incidents.
