Fears of fatalities at pedestrian crossing in busy Mayo town

Cllr Neil Cruise was speaking on the junction between the N84 Ballina Road and the main street in Foxford.

A Mayo County Councillor has issued a fresh appeal for urgent action to tackle road safety issues in Foxford town.

The councillor has also labelled the situation as a ‘disgrace’, a ‘blot on Mayo County Council and the TII’s (Transport Infrastructure Ireland) copybook’, and expressed concern about the possibility of a casualty.

The topic was brought to the table by Cllr Neil Cruise at the April monthly meeting of the Swinford-Claremorris Municipal District.

The pedestrian crossing in Foxford town centre, near the junction of the N26 and Main Street, as well as the one-way system on Main Street, were the subject of much discussion.

For Cllr Cruise, updates on the installation of safety measures have been few and far between.

“It's an amazing thing that there has been two allocations of funding and no one knows definitively what's going to happen at that pedestrian crossing,” he stated.

“I do hold the TII responsible for part of the delay, and I think that they should acknowledge that it was a bad design, and there have been inordinate delays in putting this right.

Cllr Cruise also claimed that up to ten vehicles daily also turn right off the N84 to travel the wrong way down the one-way system on Main Street.

“This has been a disgrace and an awful blot on Mayo County Council and TII's copybook in Foxford.

“It's shocking what's gone on. I'm absolutely disillusioned, disappointed and disgusted with it now at this stage, but I do hope that people will start to see the urgency of this.

“Nobody has been killed yet. There have been near misses, but someone will get badly injured, or somebody will get killed.”

Cllr Cruise, himself a resident of the town, outlined a series of proposals to enhance safety on the N84.

The first would be an electronic sign on the way into Foxford from Ballina, coming off the bridge over the River Moy, stating ‘No Right Turn’ onto Main Street.

The second would be another sign warning drivers of the pedestrian crossing in the town.
