Boost for East Mayo as new water mains come online

More than 1,500 metres of aging water mains along the Swinford Road in Kiltimagh were replaced with new, modern pipes.

Uisce Éireann customers in Kiltimagh are reaping the benefits of a more secure and reliable water supply this spring, after the recent completion of a programme of mains replacement in the East Mayo town.

More than 1,500 metres of aging water mains along the Swinford Road were replaced with new, modern pipes under Uisce Éireann’s National Leakage Reduction Programme.

The mains upgrade has facilitated an improved quality of water for homes and businesses in the town, while significantly reducing the volume of clean, treated water lost underground to leakage.

The new pipework will also reduce the likelihood of bursts and other operational issues on the network going forward, providing a more reliable supply of water for residents, businesses and visitors to Kiltimagh.

“We are delighted to have brought this major programme of mains replacements to completion,” said Enda Mac Namara, Programme Manager with Uisce Éireann.

“These new mains will provide multiple benefits for the community in Kiltimagh. As well as an improved water supply for homes and businesses, the upgrades have reduced high levels of leakage while creating operational efficiencies in the local water network.”

These works were carried out on behalf of Uisce Éireann by Farrans Construction.

In order for these mains upgrade to be carried out safely and efficiently, a road closure was required at Attavally over recent months. Uisce Éireann wishes to thank residents, businesses and road-users impacted by this road closure for their patience and understanding while diversions were in place.

Uisce Éireann's National Leakage Reduction Programme has dedicated teams working across the country to fix on average 2,000 leaks per month.
