Western Development Commission CEO Allan Mulrooney highlights innovation and diaspora connections ahead of the London 'Plug into the West' event.

People from Mayo and the wider West of Ireland living in London are being invited to reconnect with home at a major upcoming event celebrating the region’s growth and potential.

‘Plug into the West’ will take place on May 13 at the London Irish Centre, bringing together members of the Irish diaspora, business leaders, creatives and investors with an interest in the West and Northwest.

Hosted by the Western Development Commission, the event will showcase how the region, including Mayo, evolved into a hub for innovation, enterprise and community-led development.

Attendees will hear from a range of speakers and organisations helping to shape that transformation.

Insights will also be shared by leading innovation centres such as PorterShed, CREW (Creative Enterprise West), AIM Centre and Platform 94, highlighting the collaborative ecosystem supporting startups and talent across the region.

CEO of the Western Development Commission Allan Mulrooney said the initiative aims to strengthen ties between the region and its diaspora.

“The West and Northwest of Ireland are experiencing an exciting period of growth,” he said. “We want people in London — whether they are from the region or simply curious — to feel welcome and included.”

The evening will also offer networking opportunities and cultural elements designed to give attendees a “flavour of home,” while encouraging connections that could lead to future investment, collaboration or even a return to the region.

Organisers say the event is the first in a planned London-based series aimed at building long-term relationships and promoting the West of Ireland as a place to live, work and innovate.

For Mayo natives abroad, the event presents a chance to reconnect with a region that continues to evolve while maintaining its strong sense of identity and community.
