'Heartfelt tears' in Mayo village as popular café closes doors

Achill Island Kitchen in Dooagh has announced their closure.

The people of Mayo waved goodbye to a much-loved business as Achill Island Kitchen has closed its doors.

The business in Dooagh Village, which was run by local woman Sarah Lavelle, was always welcoming to those who passed through the door with their home-made baked goods and fantastic hospitality.

Tourists and visitors to the island, in particular to the iconic Dooagh Beach, regularly stopped in to sample the Achill Island welcome.

People in the village have expressed their sadness at the loss of the staple of the community.

"From the delicious coffee and homemade cakes, to the quick nip in for milk and bread, it was so much more than a shop or café," Dooagh Day wrote on their Facebook page.
"It was a meeting place for neighbours, a social outlet for those who might not have many interactions, and a welcoming space for everyone.
"Sarah’s unwavering support for local producers and community events made a real difference, and her kindness and hard work never went unnoticed. You will be truly missed."
