Paul Lawless, TD, has criticised the decision to refurbish Mayo County Council chamber Aras an Chontae over other projects.
Mayo County Council is facing criticism over plans to spend €2.15 million on refurbishing their council chamber and foyer, a cost that could rise to over €3 million when interest is included.
Paul Lawless, Aontu TD for Mayo, has voiced strong opposition, arguing that public funds should instead be invested in projects that directly benefit the people of Mayo. Deputy Lawless suggested priorities should include housing and related infrastructure, roads and transport improvements, recreational and sports facilities, inclusive playgrounds, and support for local businesses and community groups.
Cllr Deirdre Lawless also said: “I am fully opposed to this huge spend on the council chamber. We can spend this money much better. Please sign our petition to show your opposition to this.”
A petition opposing the refurbishment has been launched by Deputy Lawless, urging residents to have their say on how €2 million could be better spent. It can be viewed here.
