The number of gardaí stationed in County Mayo has increased over the past year, but the force is yet to recover to the strength it experienced during the Covid-19 pandemic.

The latest figures reveal that there are 311 gardaí operating in the county, as of December 2025.

This represents a 1.3 percent increase on the previous year’s figure of 307. However, the figure remains well below the 2020 total of 343. 

Of the 311 gardaí stationed in Mayo, 141 are on general duty, 58 are sergeants and 9 are inspectors. There is also one superintendent and one chief superintendent.

Castlebar boasts the largest number of gardaí in the county, with 66 gardaí operating in the town. It is followed by Ballina with 55 and Swinford with 41.

Meanwhile, 39 gardaí are stationed in Claremorris, while there are 26 on duty in Westport.

Elsewhere, Ballyhaunis has 11 gardaí, Kilkelly has 8 and Ballinrobe has 7. A number of other towns and villages have garda numbers in the single figures.

The Garda Commissioner is responsible for the management and administration of An Garda Síochána under Section 33 of the Policing, Security and Community Safety Act 2024.
