MEP Nina Carberry calls on residents along Mayo's 1,100km coastline to shape EU policy on tourism, fishing and renewable energy
North-West MEP Nina Carberry has called on people living in coastal areas of Mayo to engage with the consultation process aimed at shaping a future strategy for coastal regions, which was launched this week by the EU.
The representative, who serves as Vice Chair of the European Parliament’s Seas, Rivers and Islands Intergroup, said it is vital that the views of local communities are reflected in future policy decisions.
“With more than 1,100 kilometres of coastline, Mayo is uniquely positioned to contribute to this consultation,” she said.
Carberry stressed that feedback from coastal regions will play a key role in informing how the EU supports tourism, renewable energy development, sustainable fishing and regional connectivity in the years ahead.

She encouraged respondents to outline the main challenges facing their communities and to comment on which EU rules and regulations are working effectively and which require change.
“This is an important opportunity for Mayo’s coastal communities to shape the future direction of EU policy,” she added.
Tourism remains a significant economic driver in the county, generating more than €300 million annually, while fishing and marine-related industries continue to play a central role in many coastal towns and villages.
Nina Carberry, who is Ireland’s only sitting MEP on the European Parliament’s Budget Committee, recently backed proposals to increase the EU’s Maritime, Fisheries and Aquaculture Fund to at least €7 billion. The proposal includes ring-fenced funding to support fleet renewal and modernisation, as well as encouraging generational renewal within the fisheries and seafood processing sectors.

She is encouraging individuals, community groups and industry stakeholders across Mayo to take part in the consultation and ensure their voices are heard as the EU develops its long-term strategy for coastal communities.
