Mayo libraries invite readers to mark Ireland Reads month with events, competitions and more

Readers across the county are being invited to celebrate Ireland Reads Month at their local branch of Mayo Library Service, as it celebrates its 100th anniversary.

Ireland Reads month

Celebrate Ireland Reads Day on Saturday, February 28, in your local Mayo Library Service.

For Mayo readers, \ month-long celebration of books, writers and reading will culminate on Ireland Reads Day today Saturday, February 28, when library staff are encouraging people to call in and explore everything on offer.

While books remain at the heart of the service, Mayo libraries now provide a wide range of additional resources. Members can borrow musical instruments for children starting lessons, including everything from a bodhrán to a harp. Home Energy Savings Kits are available to help households reduce energy bills, along with blood pressure monitors and radon monitors for home use. Reusable Party Kits can also be borrowed for birthdays, Communions or Confirmations as an alternative to disposable tableware.

For those stuck in a reading rut, library staff are on hand with recommendations, drawing on their own reading experience and the knowledge shared through local book clubs.

Library members can also access ebooks, audiobooks, newspapers and magazines through the BorrowBox app, which allows users to download titles directly to their phone or tablet.

This year also marks a major milestone, as Mayo Library Service celebrates its 100th anniversary. To mark the occasion, a Create a Bookmark Competition will be launched on Ireland Reads Day.

Entry forms and blank bookmarks will be available in all branches, with design stations set up on the day. Participants are invited to create a slogan or illustration reflecting what their library means to them. The winning design will be professionally printed and distributed across the county’s libraries.
