Mayo Community Futures, a community-led planning programme coordinated by Mayo County Council, is inviting towns, villages and rural areas across the county to take part in its next phase, giving local people a direct role in shaping the future of their communities.
The initiative encourages communities to develop five-year Community Action Plans that identify local priorities, key projects and long-term ambitions. The process ensures that residents of all ages and backgrounds have the opportunity to contribute to decisions that affect where they live, work and socialise.
The programme is built on strong local involvement. Each participating area sets up a Community Futures Steering Group made up of representatives from local clubs, voluntary groups, businesses and other community members. With support from trained Community Support Workers, the group consults widely with residents, community organisations, young people and businesses to gather ideas and priorities for the area.
This inclusive engagement results in a community-backed action plan that reflects shared local needs and aspirations, while also informing strategic planning at local, county and national level.

So far, more than 40 communities across Mayo have already taken part in the programme, reporting stronger collaboration, enhanced local capacity and renewed ambition for the future. Organisers say the programme continues to play a vital role in supporting civic participation and sustainable community development across the county.
New communities are now being invited to apply to join Mayo Community Futures. Further information and application forms are available by contacting gleneghan@communityfutures.ie or by telephone on 087 2585957.
According to programme organisers, 2026 will mark the 20-year anniversary of Community Futures in Mayo, with a series of celebrations planned for October to recognise two decades of community-driven planning and local empowerment.
Oversight of the initiative is provided by the Mayo Community Futures Management Committee, which ensures effective governance, consistency and strategic direction across all participating communities.
